Thoracentesis is performed to obtain a sample of fluid from the lungs. This sample can be used to figure out what's causing the fluid to build up. In addition to obtaining a sample of the pleural fluid, the procedure can also be used to drain large amounts of fluid for therapeutic purposes. A thoracentesis can provide significant relief if excess lung fluid is making it difficult to breathe and uncomfortable to get around.

To perform a thoracentesis, the patient usually sits at a table and leans against it with his or her arms resting on the tabletop. The pleural fluid is located by ultrasound or through percussion.
