Gauge Your Heart With an Electrocardiogram

An electrocardiogram is a noninvasive test used to measure electrical activity in the heart. It is commonly referred to as an EKG or ECG. At Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine Associates, LLP, we routinely use this test to better diagnose and treat patients.

To perform this test, electrical sensors called leads are attached to specific areas of the arms, legs, and chest to record electrical activity. By looking at the activity, it is possible to assess your heart function. The EKG can also suggest a recent or past heart attack, inflammation of the pericardium, or a blood clot that has traveled to the lungs.

An electrocardiogram may be used in the diagnosis of atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure, and heart attack. Our board-certified physicians are trained to administer and interpret this test to provide you with superior care.
