DXA Scan Bone Densitometer (Riverdale Location only)

Dr. Rastogi attended the International Society for Clinical Densitometry. He has been recognized as a Certified Clinical Densitometrist after passing a rigorous exam on bone density testing for osteoporosis. There are over 5,000 certified clinicians and technologists world wide. Certification in bone density is a demonstration of proficiency and is a requirement for some insurance companies and HMOs.

PSMA has a GE Prodigy DXA Scanner in the Riverdale location. PRODIGY uses Multi-View Image Reconstruction (MVIR™) to obviate the magnification error inherent in other fan-beam densitometers. The improved accuracy of bone and soft-tissue results provides superior clinical assessment.

With medications now available and under development, experts feel that osteoporosis is a preventable and treatable disease - not an inevitable part of aging.

PSMA offers patients:

  • Qualified Technicians and Physicians
  • State-of-the-art equipment
  • Painless and non-invasive testing
  • Appointments Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Osteoporosis Information

Osteoporosis the "silent disease", causes brittle, weak bones that lead to fractures. It is also the reason for a hunched back "Dowager Hump".

  • 8 million American women have osteoporosis
  • 2 million Americanmen have osteoporosis.
  • 44 million Americans are affected. 1.5 million fractures reported each year.
  • $17 billion annual healthcare cost.

Osteoporosis fractures can result in chronic pain, disability, loss of independence, and even death. 20% mortality rate is associated with hip fractures.

An additional 30% of hip fracture patients require nursing home care.

Osteoporosis Risk Factors

  • Female Post menopausal
  • Low body weight
  • Smoking
  • History of fracture, after age 50
  • Excessive use of alcohol
  • Family history of osteoporosis related to fractures
  • Exposure to Corticosteroids (inhaled or oral)

A regular evaluation of bone density with DXA scan is recommended on a periodic basis. Early detection of low bone density, before fractures occur, is the key to successful management.

Ask your physician at PSMA about a bone density evaluation.
