Pulmonary Function Test - PFT

Lung function test (also called pulmonary function test, or PFT) evaluates how well your lungs work. The test determines how much air your lungs can hold, how quickly you can move air in and out of your lungs, and how well your lungs add oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from your blood. The test can diagnose lung disease and measure the severity of lung problems.

Why the test is preformed:

The test is preformed to diagnose certain types of lung disease (especially asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema), to determine the cause of shortness of breath, or to measure occupational exposure to contaminants which affect lung function. It can be used after the administration of medications to assess their effect, and to measure progress in disease treatment.
